Provincial Youth Strategy
Through this initiative, Making Waves/Vague par vague engaged teens in the development of a provincial youth strategy to prevent relationship violence. Our Provincial Youth Strategy (PYS) team members shared in a learning process to better understand the dynamics of abuse in relationships. They were provided with leadership training, and empowered to take a leadership role in the prevention of relationship violence in New Brunswick.
The Recommendations
Teens
- Be informed! Know how to recognize the many forms of abuse. Know where to turn for help.
- Speak up! When you see abuse happening, don’t ignore it. Say something, or talk to someone who can help.
- Be a role model! Younger teens look up to high school students. Set a good example in your own relationships.
- Be open and support each other! Everyone needs help sometimes.
- Educate! Share your knowledge with your peers, and with younger teens.
- Lead the way! Teens can take a leadership role in school activities around relationship violence. Form a group, and start making a difference.
- Peer-education, peer-helping, peer-counselling...teens should find ways to be there for each other.
Schools
- Guidance counsellors and teachers need to be informed about relationship violence issues. They work with youth every day. They need to be able to recognize the warning signs, and they need to know how to help.
- Schools must provide information on relationship violence. This must be included as part of classes, to make sure EVERYONE gets the message.
- Schools must have specific policies around relationship violence. Students and teachers must be aware of these policies.
- Schools must help students reach out into the community to spread the message that violence is not acceptable. The community must support the school in providing opportunities for students to learn about relationship violence issues.
- Teachers and guidance counsellors need to be comfortable talking and teaching about relationship issues. They need to be approachable and open.
